Frequently Asked Questions

Accessing our Homeschool curriculum requires a LHTS Accelerated membership, which enriches your homeschool experience by providing comprehensive resources. Benefits include full access to all homeschool lessons, weekly live Q&A sessions with Meredith, additional self-paced courses, exclusive discounts, community connections via Discord, and ongoing support. You can read all about Accelerated here

Our Homeschool Program is versatile and designed for various age groups, from pre-K to middle school. Each week’s activities are tailored to match different learning levels and abilities. These age recommendations are based on homeschool requirements. The content is appropriate for all ages. We also include more mature courses within Accelerated for high school students and older.

The Homeschool Curriculum spans 60+ weeks across two full academic years, providing a structured and comprehensive learning path. Additionally, there are 12 bonus lessons themed around holidays and specialized topics. (Note: Lessons will be released in a drip fashion throughout the first year of the curriculum)

No prior experience in ASL is necessary. Our program starts with the basics, making it ideal for beginners and gradually builds up to more advanced concepts, suitable for all learning stages.

All core content is included in your membership. You’ll need a stable internet connection and a device for watching videos. Some lessons include optional printable activities, so access to a printer is helpful. Basic school supplies like scissors, glue, or markers may also come in handy.

Absolutely! We encourage family learning. Our program is designed in a way that parents and children can learn and practice ASL together, enhancing family bonding and communication skills.

We offer a satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not completely satisfied within the first 30 days of the program, you can request a full refund. You can just email us at contact@learnhowtosign.com

Yes, the Accelerated program gives students access to weekly live Zoom calls with Meredith (and our other instructors) every Tuesday at 8:00 pm CT. This is an opportunity for students to have their questions answered and learn valuable lessons. If you can’t attend live, these sessions are recorded and made available by the next morning.

The curriculum is self-paced and can be navigated and completed according to your own schedule. Families can start and stop at any time. We created the curriculum with a traditional Fall start time in mind: the first semester ideally begins in August and finishes before the end of the year, while the second semester begins in January and ends in May.

We use both PayPal and Stripe to process payments. The primary method of payment is credit/debit card. If you require special accommodations through your homeschool group, contact us, and we will work with you and your institution. Contact Us

Yes. Each additional family member can purchase another membership for an additional $50 per account. This additional membership will carry the same term (annual or lifetime) as the initial account. After making your initial purchase, let us know how many family members you would like added to your account by emailing us at contact@learnhowtosign.com

Lessons for Year 1 will be released in a drip fashion. The entire first unit will be available on August 1, and each subsequent unit will be released at the beginning of the next 5-week period. Year 2 content will also follow a similar structured release schedule.

The existing homeschool curriculum will become our “Legacy Homeschool Curriculum” and will remain accessible. A link to the “old” curriculum will always be available on the Homeschool Homepage (/accelerated/homeschool).

The Homeschool curriculum is one of the many valuable offerings included in the LHTS Accelerated membership. Accelerated is a paid membership program that provides extensive resources such as self-paced ASL courses, weekly live sessions, community support through Discord, exclusive discounts, and additional specialized content. To access the Homeschool curriculum, you simply enroll as an Accelerated member.

Each lesson is designed to be completed in about 20-30 minutes, depending on your child’s age, ability, and interest level. Some families spend additional time on additional activities, printables, or other resources available with the Accelerated membership (weekly Zoom call, silent chats, etc), but that’s totally up to you.

Nope! Our video-based lessons do all the teaching for you. You and your child can learn together. Everything is guided by instructors with clear demonstrations, so no prior experience is needed.

In many states, American Sign Language qualifies as a foreign language credit. Because requirements vary, we recommend checking with your local school district or state board of education. We’re happy to provide a general course description or documentation to help support your case.

We include online assessments every five weeks, along with printable study guides and review materials. We also make a progress chart available to you. You can also encourage your child to keep a journal, record practice videos (to look back at later).

No worries! The program is completely self-paced. You can move through the lessons at a speed that works for your family. Whether you take a break and pick back up or follow the suggested schedule week by week, the curriculum is designed to be flexible.

Our ASL curriculum is designed to be neutral and accessible to families of all backgrounds. While the owners, Meredith and Brian are Christians, the curriculum is not a “Christian” curriculum. We do occasionally reference holidays or cultural topics, but the focus is always on language learning, understanding Deaf culture, and real-world application.

Yes! We love seeing families learn together. However, each family participating will need their own membership. If you’re part of a co-op or group and interested in bulk pricing, contact us and we’ll be happy to work with you. We require at least 10 individuals to participate in a packaged group rate. We also have a “Facilitator” plan for those wanting to use our curriculum in a classroom setting as the teacher.

Yes! We think our curriculum is a great classroom resource. With all of the curated video lessons, activities and printables our curriculum can take a lot of the prep work off of the teacher. When the curriculum is used in a corporate or classroom setting a “Facilitator” plan is required. If students want or need their own accounts to access the material outside of the classroom, this will require a “Group” plan where an organization or individuals can pay for a reduced group rate. Both of these plans are handled on a case-by-case basis, so contact us if you’re interested.

Our homeschool curriculum is built specifically for families and kids. It’s structured, age-appropriate, and includes grammar, culture, fingerspelling, assessments, and hands-on activities. You’re not just watching one-off videos—you’re moving through a full, guided program with support and a real community behind it.

We understand life changes. You can cancel your membership at any time through your account settings or by contacting us. If you’re on a monthly plan, access ends at the end of your billing period. Annual and lifetime plans are non-refundable after the 30-day satisfaction guarantee window. Annual plans will retain access to their membership until the end of that billing period after cancellation.

Yes! Many families with children who have ADHD, dyslexia, autism, or other learning differences have found our curriculum to be highly accessible. The visual, hands-on nature of ASL is especially helpful for diverse learners. Because it’s self-paced and structured by week, you can adapt the schedule, materials, and pace to meet your child’s individual needs.

Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar, fingerspelling, and Deaf culture, but fluency takes time, consistency, and immersion. To truly become fluent, learners need to engage regularly and apply their skills in real-world settings. Getting involved in your local Deaf community through events, church, or other gatherings is a great way to make meaningful connections and absorb the nuances of ASL necessary for fluency over time.

Yes! You can log in from a computer, tablet, or smartphone, perfect for learning at home or on the go. If different students in your family would like to track their own progress through our online courses, they will each need their own account. Families can add additional accounts for $50 per person.

I have also taken a beginner ASL course elsewhere and learned basic ASL. However, after I discovered LHTS I learned so much more. The live intensive courses are amazing, my two boys and I love the Homeschool Program. I love being an Accelerated Member and being part of the LHTS family has brought so much joy to our ASL learning journey.

When we started homeschool we knew we wanted to continue sign language and were thrilled to find the LHTS had a homeschool program! We bought it immediately and have been enthralled with it. The learning style is perfect for younger learners (and older ones like me). The signs and directions are clear and Meredith does a wonderful job explaining the regional/evolutionary variations on signs while still making them easy to understand.

    Meredith Rathbone

    Owner, Head Instructor

Meredith has over 20 years of ASL second language experience. She holds a M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis in Deaf and Hard of Hearing and B.A. in ASL to English Interpretation. She is a nationally certified education interpreter and state certified ASL Teacher.

Meredith began her career as a full time educational interpreter while taking on community interpreting assignments (doctors appointments, job interviews, etc) after school and on weekends. She continues her interpreting practice by volunteering at her church. She has been an ASL teacher at the High School level for 10 years and recently resigned to work full-time for Learn How to Sign. She is also an adjunct professor at the college level.

Meredith is Co-Owner of Learn How to Sign LLC with her husband Brian. She is responsible for being the main instructor and face of the LHTS brand. Meredith is heavily involved in the strategic planning of the company, and is the main writer and on-screen talent for all courses, videos and social media posts. Meredith feels called to be an ASL advocate and teacher and has dedicated her whole life to doing just that. Learn How to Sign is the most recent chapter of this journey and she is so excited about what the future holds for Learn How to Sign and her family.

    Brian Rathbone

    Owner, Director

Brian is the husband to Meredith and has over 20 years of experience as a professional video producer and director. He holds a B.A. in Journalism with an emphasis in Broadcast and Electronic Media. Brian began his career as a freelance video producer and worked part time for a local news station and a television ministry in Tulsa, OK. In 2012 Brian and Meredith relocated to Texas where he began his 10 year run as Video Director at a large church.

Meredith and Brian started a family YouTube channel, “K&L Family Time”, in 2019. Brian thought it would be a great way to scratch his creative itch and spend more quality time with his family including son and daughter Kate and Lane (K&L). After producing more than 50 videos they rebranded that channel to “Learn How to Sign” in October of 2020. In 2022 Brian resigned from his full-time job in ministry to work full-time for recently formed Learn How to Sign LLC. The Learn How to Sign YouTube channel now has over 600,000 subscribers.

Brian is the founder of both the Learn How to Sign’s YouTube Channel and LLC and loves working every day to make it the best learning resource for ASL in every way. To this day he still does all of the filming, editing, graphic/web design and business development. However, he does look forward to the day where he can delegate some of those responsibilities.

    Darla Lane

    Instructor

Darla is the perfect representation of “it’s never too late to learn something new”. She went back to college in her late 30s to take a step of faith in learning a new language and profession. After her first community class she was hooked and knew this was where she was meant to be and what she was meant to do.

Darla has been a sign language interpreter for 22 years holding her state’s highest interpreting certification and national certification in educational interpreting. She has interpreted in a variety of settings including community, video relay, educational and religious. Darla brings a unique perspective with her years of expertise and variety of settings she has worked in.

Personally, Darla has been married for 39 years and LOVES to travel. She would like to share, she has two beautiful daughters, Meredith and Hilary,  and three amazing grandchildren. (Editor’s note: And yes, that Meredith is me. She blessed me with one of the greatest gifts, ASL.)

Darla joins our Intensives as one of the 3 instructors and loves to share about her personal experiences as an ASL Interpreter. Students love hearing her perspectives on the profession as they are often interested in pursuing it as a career.

    Sarah Martindale

    Instructor

Sarah became Deaf at the age of 4 after contracting spinal meningitis. In 1994, she graduated from Texas Christian University with a BA in Deaf Education and then in 1998 received her master’s in school counseling. She spent 5 years in the classroom as a middle school Deaf Education Teacher and 3 years as a School Counselor for the Deaf K-12. She left education to be a stay-at-home mom but returned in 2015 to teach American Sign Language at the secondary level. Sarah has a passion for teaching ASL and sharing her experience as a Deaf person.

She would like her students to be open to ask her anything about ASL and being Deaf. No question is unusual. Part of learning about ASL is learning what it is like to be Deaf so don’t hesitate to ask her anything.

Sarah joins our Intensives as one of the 3 instructors and loves to share about her personal experience of growing up deaf. Students love her stories and perspectives on Deaf culture.
