ASL Classifiers

An “ASL classifier” refers to a linguistic element used to represent objects and their movement in signing. Classifiers are handshapes that are typically used to convey information about the size, shape, or movement of objects, people or animals as well as their location or orientation in signing space.

ASL classifiers are an important part of ASL and are used in various contexts to describe physical objects, people, and their actions. For example, a classifier can be used to represent a car moving or a person walking. There are different types of classifiers in ASL, each with its own specific handshapes and meanings.
