LHTS Intensive Testimonials

Best. Class. Ever. My ASL skills have grown so much from this class. The top notch instructors offered different perspectives from all aspects of ASL and Deaf culture. Each class was engaging and so much fun! It flew by! The technical side was also very well done and ran super smooth. This class solidified my desire to work as an interpreter someday, as well as learn this beautiful language with my family. Can’t wait to take the next class!

I was more than satisfied with the course. Not only did it provide me with the discipline and structure I need to learn ASL, which I have been trying to do for years, but it also taught me a lot about Deaf culture and the community. I would definitely take another class with Meredith, Darla, and Sarah!
Juliana G
This was a great class! I love how I not only learned signing, I learned about Deaf culture as well. Both are equally important. I am very grateful that there was a question and answer period each session. I would recommend you know your letters before taking the class but that is just my opinion.
Lori C
A fantastic course!!! My ASL knowledge went from none, to being able to confidently hold a basic conversation. All three instructors have SO much knowledge to share and so much willingness to share it and they all make learning so enjoyable! As a beginner, I found the pace of the course to be just right. Lots of repetition, lots of chances to ask questions and great vocabulary videos to watch and learn from. I am so glad I 'stumbled' upon Learn How To Sign on Youtube which then led me to this course. Can't wait for the opportunity to use my new skills and to add to them with further courses. Thank you Learn How To Sign!!!
Jessamy B
LHTS classes? Sign me up! I found that Learn How to Sign’s intensives, classes, and additional resources are some of the best ways to help me learn through my ASL journey. Not only did the first intensive give me the knowledge I needed to move on and continue signing in general, but it taught me more about deaf culture, community, and history. If you’re looking to learn ASL with highly experienced teachers and a friendly community, then LHTS sounds right for you. I highly recommend LHTS’s classes, and hope to continue them myself!
Emma K
I have been trying to learn sign language because my granddaughter isn't speaking that much. I have done videos with my granddaughter signing time. I really needed a full class that included vocabulary, practice signing in videos with teacher reponse, Listening to a deaf persons perspective and practicing and testing to see what we have retained. Thank you for helping me beable to made sentences and sign to my granddaughter.
Kathy S
This user-friendly course helped me make the leap into finally learning some ASL after years of lacking the confidence to get started. The history lessons about ASL and Deaf culture were especially helpful in contextualizing the language, which really improved my grammar and retention.
Rebekah B
I had a blast during the three week intensive! Meredith, Sarah, and Darla were engaging an informative. I look forward to signing up for everything that LHTS has to offer in the future.
Sarah D
I have been in numerous classes that taught stuff out of a book, so boring and not interested. These women brought realistic real world personal experience and teaching to the table. well worth the price and then some. opened my eyes to a whole different level of signing and what I want to do. Thank you
Richard S
I went into this course with little knowledge of ASL and I left with skills that give me the confidence to have a basic conversation with a deaf or hard of hearing individual. The instructors are top-notch and it is evident an incredible amount of work went into putting the curriculum together. I can't recommend this course enough if you are looking to learn ASL just for fun or to communicate with the hearing impaired.
Kristina M
I started teaching myself ASL and deaf history and culture over a year ago. I use books, flash cards, and various YouTube channels including LHTS. Impressed with LHTS and when I became aware of their summer intensive courses I had no doubt it was perfect for me. After taking the challenging but very rewarding course, I was definitely glad I did. Beyond being educational in all aspects, it has inspired and has me even more driven to continue my education in ASL and deaf culture/ community. Thank you Meredith, Sarah Darla and Bryan. (Typing this on Mt cell, please forgive any typos...lol)

The Summer Intensive Course was amazing. If you are looking to learn about American Sign Language you have found the right place. From vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, fingerspelling, numbers and Deaf culture. Meredith is an excellent teacher making learning this beautiful language so much fun. Thank you also to Darla and Sarah for their teaching and insights as well! I can hardly wait to take the next course! Thank you!
Robin R
I LOVED this class! Meredith is a wonderful teacher with great enthusiasm. I liked having a live, interactive class with reviews, homework and quizzes to reinforce what I was learning. I am amazed how much I learned in 3 weeks. I can't wait to sign up for the next class!
Cathy S
LHTS summer intensive was the most positive experience I’ve ever had in an online class. Each teacher was compassionate, knowledgeable, professional and encouraging. Sarah, Darla and Meredith are incredibly passionate and their desire to build up the deaf community it truly a blessing! Because of this ASL intensive course, I feel more confident than ever I too can sign/communicate effectively with Deaf people of all situations!! I am so thankful to be apart of the deaf community thanks to LHTS summer intensive!!
Ivy G
I found the course to be very helpful with teaching the 5 parameters of ASL and it also promoted an understanding of deaf culture. I really enjoyed the Teachers and the pace of this class . Meredith, Darla and Sara were all amazing. Shout out to Brian for all the behind the scenes, tech stuff.
Cindra V
The summer intensive was fantastic and absolutely boosted my knowledge and desire to learn asl! I would encourage anybody interested in learning ASL to take this class (and subscribe to their YouTube channel)! The format and teachers were excellent and brought great insight, years of experience and humor. Not only do you learn asl parameters and structure, but also personal experience of Deaf culture to gain a greater appreciation for the language. I look forward to learning more!
Lisa G
This course has really helped me gain confidence in my signing skills and has inspired me to keep going. The LHTS team knows what they're doing and this course has been so rewarding!
Julia B
A wonderful experience with a community of people eager to learn! Meredith, Darla, and Sarah each provided invaluable contributions to the course that ensured the students were introduced to ASL not just through signs, but fingerspelling, Deaf culture, and real-world experiences!
Hannah S
The Learn How to Sign Summer Intensive was a superb way to really advance my knowledge of basic ASL signs, finger spelling, and grammar. In 3 short weeks I feel that my confidence and overall comfortability with sign language was quite enhanced. I am in NO WAY even close to being ready to sign comfortably, but I do feel as though I could carry on some basic conversations with a deaf person. This course is a great kickstart to what I hope will be fluency in ASL in the future. I have already signed up to be a lifetime member because Meredith and her staff know how to teach and convey sign language so well!! If you take this course, I think you will be very pleased with all the knowledge that you will gain.
Stephanie D
In this course, I gained both new vocabulary and an introduction to ASL grammar. I also got several of my questions answered in a way that simply watching Youtube videos can't do. WIth the scheduled classes and quizzes, I was motivated to work and stay on target in that good way taking a course can provide. I would absolutely recommend this course to others and do another course in the future.
Susan W
A big thank you to everyone at Learn How to Sign for making this course so engaging and enjoyable, and for making everyone feel included. An 🤟🏻to Meredith for being such an amazing instructor and for brightening up the class atmosphere with your humor. Thank you so much for helping me improve my ASL skills through this course! 🤟🏻

As an online student of ASL, without access to the deaf community or a deaf person, I struggled to polish my skills. The Summer Intensive was the answer to my problems over not having a legitimate source for asking ASL questions, and receiving feedback on my signing progress. The planning and work that the Rathbone family puts into its website and classes is unbelievable. I finally have an ASL family where I can learn and grow in my ASL skills without feeling uneasy or embarrassed. Highly recommended!
Mary P
I have never taken an ASL class prior to their summer intensive. Meredith, Darla and Sarah never let me feel like I was falling behind and I truly felt comfortable with their patience and guidance. Everything was explained with compelling stories, humor and truth. The structure of the classes was absolutely wonderful. I very much can’t wait to see what’s next.
Andres T
Taking this class has been the best experience. Learning from all the instructors with the combined education blows me away. The positive feedback given through out the class was a plus. Not only did you learn new vocabulary you made it fun with Kahoot and continued the teaching through homework and quizzes When the instructors answer your questions the made sure to answer them fully and with examples. This whole experience has made quite an impact on how I see others and the deaf community as a whole. I am inspired to try to become as immersed into this culture that I possibly can. I can not say enough positive things about this ASL Intensive class other than can’t wait for ASL 2 class. Thank you so much for this experience and teaching this beautiful language.
Brenda M
I signed up for this class because I am health care worker and want to learn ASL so that I can communicate with deaf and hard of hearing patients. This course has given me a good starting foundation and I can't wait to learn more in future courses! Meredith is a great teacher and her assistants Darla and Sarah were helpful and patient. The interactive sessions during the class were fun and the homework on FlipGrid was very helpful. This is a great course and I highly recommend it!
Rachel R
The LHTS Summer Intensive course was phenomenal! I was worried about taking an online course for ASL and how I would be able to ensure I'm learning and signing correctly. Meredith and her team are fantastic instructors who are watching and teaching all class. Plus the homework assignments provided the opportunities to be coached one-on-one. I learned so much in this class and have increased my confidence as a beginner. I'm looking forward to future LHTS Intensive courses!!
Alex H
I thought I was going to miss a lot with the large class and the faster pace than I'm used to but I learned more in this class than I have in my 12 week Level 1 and 5 of the 12 weeks of Level 2. I'm still in that class and it now feels SUPER SLOW.
Anne M
This was a wonderful introductory course which moved at a good pace and accommodated a variety of learning modes. Personal feedback from Meredith and video interaction with fellow students was helpful. I highly recommend this course!
Kathryn T
Meredith’s teaching methods are honest and relatable. I have learned so much from her in class and from her channel on YouTube. I cannot wait for the next intensive. She is very family oriented and bringing additional teachers of family and friends added a great deal of warmth and community to her class.
Jillian Q
Best ASL class for someone who has a tiny bit of knowledge but want to improve massively in a short amount of time!
Beiliang Z
The summer intensive was a great tool to have me disciplined and sat at the computer for 2 hours at a time to focus on ASL. I love that the classes were live and interactive, and the instructors were so kind and passionate!
Glenda M
ASL summer intensive was very well organized. I really enjoyed the live sessions. Meredith, Darla, and Sarah are amazing teachers. I feel like I learned a lot, Sarah's input on Deaf culture was very valuable. The course was set up in a way that made me feel confident to start signing right away. It was very well balanced with content vocabulary, fingerspelling, grammar, deaf culture, and game time to check for understanding. The homework assignments were very appropriate to show what we've learned and to give us the opportunity to practice, practice, practice. I recommend this course to anybody who wishes to give ASL a try. You won't regret it.
Victoria T
Loved the 2022 Summer Intensive! Really enjoyed watching Sarah sign, the review quizzes as we went along and the vocab before each class!
Ashley S
Thank you so much for offering this course! I was amazed at the amount and the quality of information shared. You really packed so much into these three weeks. The modules you walked us through gave us so much practical content for having conversations with other signers, and the information shared about Deaf culture along with questions answered makes me feel more comfortable about attempting conversations. Thank you so much for giving us the gift of communicating with others through ASL!
Megan M
Great balance of pace, content, activities, homework, teacher perspectives, Deaf culture, etc.
Tanya B
I REALLY loved participating in this class! Because of my work and family's schedule, I would have preferred a longer course with shorter meeting times - the pace of this was a little intense but doable for the short duration of the course. The instructors were all super-helpful, knowledgeable, and fun. I greatly value that one of the instructors is deaf herself - her warmth, candor, and humor in describing her perspective and experiences really enriched the overall course experience. The live course content, homework, activities, and quizzes were engaging and just challenging enough to keep me motivated but never discouraged. I have seen huge improvement in my ease of signing, receptive signing skills, and vocabulary. I cannot recommend this course highly enough. P.S. the technical support was fantastic - fast, and helpful with detailed responses.
Emily M
This was an amazing intensive. I enjoyed all of the instructors. Highly recommend this course.
Lauren V
Meredith and her team are awesome! Their live online course is fun, engaging and full of important information, in addition to effectively teaching this beautiful language. I highly recommend LHTS courses and programs if you're serious about learning ASL!
Lia F
Like maybe many others these days, my initial interest in ASL was fostered by finding videos on YouTube. Viewing some of Meredith's awesome videos, I then signed up for the Learn How to Sign newsletter, which led me to taking the 3-week intensive course. And, WOW! This course exceeded expectations. I knew I would leave the course with some solid foundational signing skills, but I could not have anticipated just how much I would learn. And, I could not have anticipated that I would learn so much about the Deaf community. The format of having multiple instructors, including an actual member of the Deaf community(thank you Sarah!!!!!), was amazing. The homework was interactive, the quizzes were fun, and I really could go on and on. If you have any interest in learning ASL, this course is so worthwhile. Lastly, as a fellow teacher, I could get a truly palpable sense of how much Meredith cares about the people she is collaborating with. I will be signing up for pretty much every future course, as a lifelong journey to learning ASL feels like it has officially begun. Oh! And, I am passing on what I've learned to my 10 year old hearing nephew. We're Zooming once a week, so the joy and respect tied to this beautiful language is spreading!!
Chris C
This course is a great starter to understand the ASL culture, history, language structure, most common and useful words to use in small talk, introductions and daily conversations. There was also a great sense of community and homework was fun.

As a teacher, I know the societal pressure put on us to share our gifts for free. I also know, because most of us are a certain type of people, we feel guilty asking for payment for our teaching services. Meredith and her husband could be charging FAR more for the gifts they share. Meredith has offered a very unique opportunity at an accessible price and in an accessible way, not to mention all of the free content everywhere. If I were evaluating Meredith as an administrator she’d be highly effective in her instructional planning and delivery. And the best part is, they are just good people. I’ve enjoyed my time with Meredith and reviewing all of her free material on her YouTube channel. I am a lifetime member now and will be taking any classes she offers in the future. Dr. Jen Aniano, Ed.D.

The 2022 Summer Intensive Class was an amazing immersion into ASL. Meredith is such an enthusiastic instructor it’s hard not to be excited about learning. She explains things so well it makes learning come naturally. The addition of two other teachers enhanced our learning, but the inclusion of a deaf instructor truly rounded out the class by giving us a window into the deaf community. While I am still an ASL beginner I went from a few signs and the alphabet to now being able to sign and understand simple sentences. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who would like to learn ASL and understand more about the deaf community.
Erin M
The Fall Intensive course is amazing! It is fast paced and full of what you need to get signing quickly! All the teachers are informative and exciting to learn from! From culture to conversation you'll find yourself immersed in interactivity and fun! If you're ready to learn more than just vocab and are looking to be part of something more don't hesitate, start today!!

I am hearing, and I am very dependent on hearing verbal explanations for learning. Thus, this is the best ASL class I've had, and I feel that I've made much more progress than with any other attempts I've made at learning ASL -- including a college-level in-person class. This class covered vocabulary, ASL grammar, and Deaf culture. The primary teacher is hearing and so understands the learning needs of hearing people (or at least those of us who do not have the talent to pick up signs just by watching them). She is assisted by a Deaf teacher who gave us good insights into Deaf culture, and answered a lot of questions. They make a really good team for teaching ASL to hearing people. The class was intensive, as suggested by the title, and I was worn out by the end of each session, and there were a lot of signs to learn between the classes, but it was doable in the twice-a-week schedule. I am glad I took this class, and will probably sign up for the 201 Intensive next time it's offered.
Francoise B
This class provides valuable feedback you just can't get from watching the YouTube videos alone. The regular reviews of the alphabet made me realize I had been signing certain letters incorrectly, something I wouldn't have picked up on without a classroom setting. Learning about Deaf culture from Sarah was so valuable. I already signed up for the annual membership and started the 201 class.
Emily B
I love, love, love this intensive! Meredith's energy and encouragement is just amazing! She organizes the classes so well. I always looked forward to her feedback on the Flip videos because I value her opinion so much! Sarah was just a blessing to the class and I learned so much from her! Darla's experience teaching and interpreting was also really valuable! I can hardly wait for 301!
Lara L
LHTS is a great program! I'm an Accelerated member, completed ASL 1&2 and can't wait for the next intensive! Meredith and the other teachers are wonderful and make students feel welcome and competent. The courses and review materials are well organized, easy to understand and challenging enough to keep me motivated to continue practicing my signing and learning more each day. Their passion for this beautiful language is evident and contagious. I highly recommend LHTS courses and membership!
Lia F
What an extraordinary next step in my lifelong ASL journey! The enthusiasm and positive energy that Meredith, Darla, and Sarah bring to their classes are palpable feelings of awesomeness. I came out of the 101 course feeling like a strong foundation was in place. I am coming out of the 201 course even more eager to use my newfound skills. Being able to speak in different tenses and about a whole new range of things is so wonderfully empowering. The thoughtfulness that goes into each session is truly noteworthy. Learning new vocabulary and new speaking skills is awesome. But then, being able to learn about deaf culture from someone like Sarah takes every session to even another level. S/o Brian for making things run so smoothly. And, definitely s/o Bennett the mini schnauzer for his occasional cameos. If you have even the faintest inclination toward learning ASL, this is a place you can call home, as I will be excited to continue to do!
Chris C
I can’t even begin to put words to how top quality this course is. My ASL skills have grown over the last three weeks. It is engaging, organized, and relevant. The instructors are so incredible. Their love for ASL and respect of the Deaf community and culture shine through in their classes. Logistically, it is top notch, with tons of tech support. Our classmates really gelled together and became friends. The last class was magical as we all realized how much we were understanding AND being understood in this beautiful language. I look forward to the next intensive!
Toni N
How exciting it was for me to be able to advance in my ASL . I couldn’t have done it without the great team and teachers of this course.
Starr G
The 201 Fall Intensive Program exceeded my expectations. I am looking forward to more Intensives in the future. Meredith, Darla and Sarah are the greatest to learn from.
Angela A
I LOVE this course! I don't mean just the 201 itself but the whole Learn How to Sign school. I started learning ASL about a year ago because my son is deaf. I took 101 in June and I felt a little like a deer in the headlight still trying to adopt a foreign language. Life got busy and I didn't do much extra work between then and the 201 in October except daily use of pretty simple ASL with a 2-year-old. I was pleasantly surprised at how much easier I understood signing when 201 started which meant the 101 course had a big effect. Taking 201 felt like I was expanding my knowledge on a good foundation. I really like the 3-teacher formula, especially having Sarah who provides a wonderful insight into a deaf person's life and deaf culture. I like the way each session is divided into sections which makes 2 hours pass much more easily. And the Kahoot just made it more fun! Also the fact that I could watch the class after the live session really helped fitting the course in my schedule. To be frank, I only started learning ASL because I wanted to communicate with my son and almost all sources, first or second hand, tell me that ASL is the best way to communicate with a child born deaf. So I went ahead and started learning but couldn't help feeling resentful sometimes because it's HARD learning a new language and I felt constantly inadequate for not knowing the signs for the words I wanted to say to my son. I was taking some other classes as well as Meredith's courses throughout the year but none was as structured and comprehensive as hers. As a student, I can tell her commitment to teaching ASL to the world and her desire to actually HELP people. She is always upbeat and encouraging - to me that shows outstanding professionalism. Having learned English as a second language, I especially appreciate the clarity in her teaching of grammar because having good grammar is the foundation to learning a language well. I feel that I'm over the hurdle getting in the door with ASL and am now confident that I will be fluent someday under Meredith's guidance and

I’m so grateful for LHTS and their intensives. They don’t just teach you vocabulary. You will learn sentence structure, facial expressions and nuances, fingerspelling, receptive skills, and awareness of deaf culture. I came out of this class prepared to start taking on real world conversation.
Theo D
I am so happy I found LHTS. The classes they offer are invaluable. With each session, my vocabulary expands greatly giving me the confidence to engage with the deaf.
Angela P
This class did not disappoint!! I feel so much better prepared to use ASL in conversation now. The pace and the assignments are good and really drive home what we learn in the live classes. Highly recommend!!!!
Stephanie D
Another fantastic intensive! My knowledge and confidence with ASL has grown so much, as well as my understanding of Deaf culture. Meredith, Darla and Sarah are wonderful teachers - no question goes unanswered, and endless support and encouragement. I can’t wait for the next intensive.
Jessamy B
LHTS is a fun and comprehensive way of learning this beautiful language and the culture that uses it. The teachers are so experienced and great at explaining the content. The layout is fun and I was able to work around my schedule. Thanks to the recorded classes. I will absolutely sign up for future programs from LHTS!
Sarah
Learning ASL from the Learn How to Sign team has been my "go-to" in learning how about ASL and deaf culture. Their classes really want me to learn more and more. I can't wait for future classes.
David B
This Intensive was just what I needed to encourage me! I found the positive energy of Meredith and Sara making me want to be excellent in my signing, and wanting to learn more. I wish that the class never had to end! It was something I looked forward to each time we met. The homework was fun and besides learning more ASL I got to learn new technology too!
Faith C
ASL 201 is THE best organized, most useful, and best taught ASL class offered online. Moving from activity to activity, kept it interesting and upbeat. Expectations were high, we interacted with other students between classes, and had homework every day. Take this class if you are willing to practice every day and want to quickly boost your ASL skills.
Linda G
Loved ASL 201 Intensive class because it helped build my ASL skills along with how to organize and interpret from English to ASL.
David B
This ASL class is a wealth of information, not just learning words, but deaf culture, as well as the various opportunities available in knowing sign language. The instructors are very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions presented. I'm so very grateful to LHTS and I look forward to more classes with Meredith!
Terri J
I've been fascinated with ASL for 40 years but classes I've taken in the past were just vocab or learning the alphabet & numbers. What I needed was to learn ASL grammar and syntax and a way to practice my receptive & expressive skills. This class was all that & more. I appreciated the Deaf Culture lessons with Sarah and the opportunity to share videos of ourselves communicating in ASL with other students. I'm eagerly awaiting ASL 301 this summer!
Amie D
This is the place to be if you're looking to learn how to sign! The class content and instructors are top-notch! I was amazed at the enthusiasm and support from other students in the form of extra live chats for practice and heartfelt encouragement. Highly recommended!
Mary P
The LHTS team completely blew my mind in the ASL301 class! This class really helped me to learn more signs, structure and culture. I love how it built my ASL vocabulary. My focus and signing ability were improved tremendously by taking ASL301. My deaf friend even commented that my signing is better. I am able to hold conversations longer now because of what ASL 301 taught me. I highly recommend it!
David B
Meredith is a wonderful teacher and her confidence in me has encouraged me to do my best. My goal is to learn as much as I can to the best signer I can be. With her help and encouragement, I am making that goal a reality. Meredith, Sarah and Darla make learning this beautiful language enjoyable, and I recommend them to anyone who wants to learn American Sign Language.
Angela A
Finally, the wait is over! LHTS is the ultimate gateway to success in ASL. Immerse yourself in top-notch materials and interactive live classes that will captivate your learning journey. With enriching Deaf Culture lessons and expert lectures from teachers and interpreters, your signing skills are bound to flourish. Plus, LHTS offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow signers, ensuring continuous immersion even outside of class. Trust me, LHTS is everything you've been longing for and more!
Greg W
The intensives really put your skills to the test giving us both theoretical and practical work and confidence! I'm so lucky to have such dedicated teachers and a tech team who give us an education full of quality, relevant material, and fulfillment.
Julia B
In the 301 course, we talked about being "lifelong learners" of ASL. I believe that all of us who completed 301 are truly inspired to be such learners. The 101 and 201 courses put skills into place that you can really see coalesce within 301. When Meredith turned off her voice to ask us questions, to tell stories, etc., and I could understand what she was signing, it was such an awesome feeling, and it made it clear just how much I've learned through all three intensive courses. I have a wonderfully long road ahead of me to continue to learn ASL, but I can happily state that I am capable of communicating in ASL because of these courses. And beyond the tangible skills I have learned, Meredith, Sarah, and Darla take such care to foster positivity, build a community, and engender a true appreciation for deaf culture.
Chris C
I’ve been learning ASL for almost two years now and have had many classes with many different teachers. Meredith’s teaching on Classifiers is the clearest and most organized among all of the teachers I have had, deaf or hearing. It could be an easily overwhelming subject but the way Meredith breaks it down and leads you from simple to complex really helps a student understand the realm of classifiers. I very much look forward to ASL 401!
Beiliang Z
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Your enthusiasm and passion has encouraged me to keep going. I learned SO much and especially in this class the used of classifiers and description made all that I knew in my head come together. I no longer feel awkward signing because of the Flip assignments where I can see myself signing and redo it as often as is needed. I highly recommend this class and all of the other things that are offered in the memberships. The technology is fun and easy to use. Thank you for offering this 301 course. I am looking forward to 401 and anything else that you offer!!
Garnet F C
LHTS makes learning ASL fun and interesting. Not only are you learning the signs, but you learn about the history and culture of this language. I truly appreciate Meredith, Darla, and Sarah creating this wonderful learning experience!
Terri J
I have really enjoyed the variety of live sessions, class sessions and videos/quizzes! I can learn at my own pace and review videos multiple times if needed. Meredith, Sarah and Darla are amazing teachers!
