Duration: 3 Hours
Lectures: 5
Video: Live
Level: Intermediate

Join us on Sunday, April 21st from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm CT to embark on a unique journey to bridge faith and communication with our special Mini-Intensive course, “ASL in Church.” Designed for both aspiring interpreters and members of the church community, this live 3-hour course offers an immersive experience into the world of American Sign Language (ASL) within a spiritual setting.

Your instructors, Meredith and Darla, will lead you through an exploration of four distinct areas of signing in church; Worship, Creed, Sermons and Bible stories. With this you will be able to walk away with a better understanding of how to sign all of those things, but also come up with a strategy on how to achieve the necessary skills to start signing in church.

Welcome to “ASL in Church” Mini-Intensive!

Date: April 21
Time: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM CT
Location: Live on Zoom

This course is classified as “Intermediate” level. It is beyond the basics of ASL. However, every level of learner will be able to get something out of this course. During the live course most of the communication will be spoken English with Simultaneous Communication (Sim-Com) or Signed English. You will have the opportunity to sign along with the teachers. After the live class there will be an assignment where you interpret and sign something from English to ASL. This assignment will require a greater understanding of ASL than just the basics.

Why join?

  • Experienced Instructors: Learn from seasoned professionals, Meredith Rathbone, with over 20 years of ASL teaching experience, and Darla Lane, a respected interpreter with deep knowledge of ASL in religious contexts.
  • Engaging Format: Through interactive sessions, including a Kahoot quiz and a special giveaway, we make learning ASL fun and memorable.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: From worship songs to sermons, discover how to effectively sign and interpret various church content.

About Your Teachers

Meredith Rathbone
Asl Teacher/Interpreter

Meredith has over 20 years of ASL second language experience. She holds a M.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis in Deaf and Hard of Hearing and B.A. in ASL to English Interpretation. She is a nationally certified education interpreter and state certified ASL Teacher.

Meredith began her career as a full time educational interpreter while taking on community interpreting assignments (doctors appointments, job interviews, etc) after school and on weekends. She continues her interpreting practice by volunteering at her church. She has been an ASL teacher at the High School level for 10 years and recently resigned to work full-time for Learn How to Sign. She is also an adjunct professor at the college level.

Meredith is Co-Owner of Learn How to Sign LLC with her husband Brian. She is responsible for being the main instructor and face of the LHTS brand. Meredith is heavily involved in the strategic planning of the company, and is the main writer and on-screen talent for all courses, videos and social media posts. Meredith feels called to be an ASL advocate and teacher and has dedicated her whole life to doing just that. Learn How to Sign is the most recent chapter of this journey and she is so excited about what the future holds for Learn How to Sign and her family.

Darla Lane
ASL Interpreter

Darla is the perfect representation of “it’s never too late to learn something new”. She went back to college in her late 30s to take a step of faith in learning a new language and profession. After her first community class she was hooked and knew this was where she was meant to be and what she was meant to do.

Darla has been a sign language interpreter for 22 years holding her state’s highest interpreting certification and national certification in educational interpreting. She has interpreted in a variety of settings including community, video relay, educational and religious. Darla brings a unique perspective with her years of expertise and variety of settings she has worked in.

Personally, Darla has been married for 39 years and LOVES to travel. She would like to share, she has two beautiful daughters, Meredith and Hilary, and three amazing grandchildren. (Editor’s note: And yes, that Meredith is me. She blessed me with one of the greatest gifts, ASL.)

Darla joins our Intensives as one of the 3 instructors and loves to share about her personal experiences as an ASL Interpreter. Students love hearing her perspectives on the profession as they are often interested in pursuing it as a career.
