1. Course Introduction

Welcome to the ASL Grammar – Sentence Structure (Topic-Comment) Mini-Course!

We’re so glad you’re here! This course is designed to help you better understand the structure of ASL sentences, especially how to use Topic-Comment grammar, WH-questions, and time markers. You’ll learn how to make your signing clearer, more natural, and more expressive—whether you’re holding a casual conversation or sharing a full story.

Before you dive in, be sure to download the PDF notes that Sarah prepared for you. [Download PDF] These notes include all the essential ASL Sentence Structure rules covered in the course, and they’ll be a great resource to reference as you go.

To navigate the course, click the “Curriculum” button at the top of any page. This will open the side menu so you can jump directly to any lesson.

When you finish a lesson, don’t forget to click “Complete & Next.” This is important! Marking each lesson as complete is required in order to finish the course and receive your certificate of completion at the end.

All other instructions—like how to complete your final practice assignment—can be found within the course lessons themselves.

Let’s get started! You’re going to learn so much.
